The Armstrong Creek Sports Pavilion, now home to the Armstrong Creek Sharks Football Netball Club, was designed as a hub for the local community, supporting the formation of new Australian Rules football, netball, cricket and soccer clubs. Generous change rooms accommodate both home and away teams, supported by umpires’ rooms and administration facilities. A large multi-purpose room with commercial kitchen and bar offers social and fundraising opportunities for the clubs. Alongside a series of meeting rooms, these facilities are also available for hire by the general public, further reinforcing links to the community.
The monolithic form necessitated by the hub’s functionality was broken down through the use of hit-and-miss brickwork, large sections of glazing and exposing of key structural elements, inviting local residents to engage whilst offering sightlines across the surrounding playing fields. This is reinforced by the use of colour, delineating spaces open to the public from those servicing the clubs.
