Bundoora Secondary College offers an alternative to traditional education through its ‘Big Picture’ program, which encourages students to discover their life purpose. However, much of the existing building stock on site was outdated and too rigid to accommodate the school’s dynamic curriculum. Perkins Architects collaborated with the school to reimagine its facilities, identifying what to retain, refurbish, or replace.
Stage 1 delivered a new Science & Environments Centre supporting STEAM pathways with traditional labs opening onto flexible learning spaces. Exhibition areas celebrate student achievements, while outdoor learning zones, including a horticultural yard and garden, extend learning beyond the classroom.
A former music building was transformed into a welcoming administration centre at the front of campus, improving visibility and access. Its rear was demolished to create a community piazza, reshaping the site layout to foster connection. The design process itself became an educational tool, informing an applied maths program for students using the centre’s architecture and landscape plans as a living curriculum.
