Djila-tjarriu – (pronounced jilla-ja-roo) means “place of play” in Wadawurrung language. It’s more than a community facility. It’s a dynamic gathering place designed to meet the evolving needs of Alfredton and western Ballarat.
Purpose-built for early learning and community connection, the hub combines functionality with warmth, fostering education and spontaneous interaction.
The kindergarten features three dedicated playrooms for up to 99 children, each seamlessly connected to north-facing verandahs and outdoor play spaces, encouraging exploration and engagement with nature.
Beyond early learning, two large community rooms, a kitchen, and additional meeting spaces support a variety of workshops and events. Prioritising accessibility and easy movement between indoor and outdoor zones, the design ensures an inclusive, adaptable environment for all visitors. Convenient access is provided via a 66-space on-grade car park, reinforcing the hub’s role as a welcoming and highly utilised community asset.
Delivered on time and within budget, Djila-tjarriu Community Hub stands as a testament to thoughtful planning and meaningful design, one that will serve the community for generations to come.
