Djila-Tjarriu
Community Hub

‘Djila-tjarriu’ (pronounced jilla-ja-roo) means ‘place of play’ in Wadawurrung language. The name reflects the area’s cultural heritage, grounding the hub in a strong sense of place.

Djila-tjarriu Community Hub is more than a facility—it is a gathering place designed to support the evolving needs of Alfredton and the western Ballarat suburbs. As a purpose-built centre for early learning and community engagement, it fosters connection, education, and shared experiences within a rapidly growing neighbourhood.

The architectural design balances functionality with warmth, creating an environment that encourages both structured learning and spontaneous interaction. The kindergarten features three dedicated playrooms designed for 99 children, each seamlessly connected to north-facing verandahs and outdoor play spaces. These indoor-outdoor connections enhance learning by fostering exploration and engagement with nature.

Beyond early learning, the hub is a flexible community resource. Two large community rooms, a community kitchen, and an additional meeting space cater to a variety of events, workshops, and gatherings. The design prioritises accessibility and ease of movement, with direct connections between indoor and outdoor areas, ensuring a welcoming and adaptable environment for all visitors. A 66-space on-grade car park provides convenient access, further reinforcing the hub’s role as an inclusive and highly utilised community asset.

Delivered on time and within budget, Djila-tjarriu Community Hub stands as a testament to thoughtful planning and meaningful design—one that will serve the community for generations to come.
