Located just outside Halls Gap in the heart of the Grampians National Park, the 70-bed YHA Grampians Eco Hostel exemplifies sustainable design within a dramatic natural landscape. The building responds to its setting through low-tech, tactile materials—rammed earth, bagged brickwork, and plantation timbers—while passive solar orientation and zoning reduce operational energy use year-round.
Photovoltaic panels, solar hot water systems, rainwater harvesting and greywater recycling integrate with an interactive building envelope to form an instructive, environmentally conscious experience for visitors. Designed as both accommodation and environmental education hub, the hostel supports local and international travellers with shared kitchen and lounge spaces, a courtyard firepit, and edible gardens.
Achieving Sustainable Tourism Certification through Ecotourism Australia, the project reinforces a commitment to conservation, local culture, and community engagement, all within walking distance to the Grampians’ abundant outdoor attractions.
